Capital Punishment

Green, Melissa. “History of the Death Penalty & Recent Developments.” UAA Justice Center University of Alaska Anchorage. 4 August 2009. University of Alaska Anchorage. 25 September 2009 http://justice.uaa.alaska.edu/death/history.html

This website is an informational site about from the Justice Center of the University of Alaska Anchorage, featuring statistics and the history of the death penalty in the United States. Capital punishment is a highly debated topic, and this site is able to provide unbiased information about the death penalties that have been issued and the court cases pertaining to the death penalty. This is a good source because it is maintained by an educational institution, and contains facts from the US Department of Justice. It will help me to gain background information upon which to base my argument for my research paper.

Steroids and Society
Garle, Mats. "Use of doping agents, particularly anabolic steroids, in sports and society." Lancet. 371 (2008): 1872-1882.
The article discusses the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (refered to as AAS) as performance enhancing drugs in sports and its impact on society as a whole. Some of the main focuses of the article are the negative effects of AAS, such as an increased risk of violent behavior, and the public's perception of sports with performance-enhancing substance problems. This source is credible, as it is written based on research done by the Karolinska Instituted Department of Laboratory Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden. This source will be very helpful for my research, as it provides a starting point for my analysis of steroids and their impact on society.
I attended my library workshop last year as a freshman.

Stem Cell Research

NIH Stem Cell Information Home Page. In Stem Cell Information [World Wide Web site]. Bethesda, MD: National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2009 [cited Monday, September 28, 2009] Available at http://stemcells.nih.gov/index

This is the National Institutes of Health for the US Department of Health, the department that decides controls all medicine and medical procedures for the country. It discusses many aspects of stem cells, such as what they are, what they are used for, and even ethical issues. It has a registry of private labs already researching stem cells, as well as upcoming and current research on them. This is good because it’s unbiased information about stem cells, but still presents that there may be an ethical problem; also, it’s a government department. This is a good source because it gives a lot of information about stem cells and research concerning stem cells.

9/11 Conspiracy

Avery, Dylan. "Loose Change 9/1". Collective Minds Media Company. 9/26/2009 .

This site will be crucial for my paper. Dylan Avery is one of the main masterminds behind the 9/11 conspiracy. This cite not only has links to the film, “Loose Change”, Dylan’s popular internet video, it has links to several other useful conspiracy sites. I think I must be careful when view the material on this page and for this particular subject I will have to a lot of source checking on the information I am given. Conspiracy theorists tend to stretch facts to support their ideas. Also, at first I thought the forum on this site would be useless, but after spending around fifteen minutes reading some posts I found that people were able to say their opinion on there without being called crazy conspiracy theorists. One thing this site lacks is any sort of opposition to their ideas, but if you are to watch the video you will see that they leave little room to argue.

Child Soldiers

Beah, Ishmael. Editorial. The Making, and Unmaking, of a Child Soldier. The New York Times, 14 Jan. 2007. Web. 6 Sept. 2009. .

This is an article on The New York Times website written by a man who escaped from being a child soldier in Africa. The author talks about what is was like being a child soldier and what it means to him to be free of it and living in the United States. This is a very reliable source for me because it is a primary source. The man actually went through the experience of being a child soldier.

The date I signed up for the library 100 workshop is October 7th at 9:05 am.

Bigfoot

“Bigfoot.” Ancient Mysteries A&E. 1994.

This is a documentary on bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest of the US. It discusses evidence found such as footprints, hair, video, photos and audio. It talks about the past folklore about bigfoot and the phenomenon and followers today. It interviews an anthropologist and a cryptozoologist who research and believe in the possibility that a bigfoot exists. The documentary also interviews an anthropologist who is a skeptic. This is good because it isn’t all focused on one opinion or the other. The source is a good for my research because it introduces me to experts and evidence that I can research further.

Resources

For my topic of outdoor emergency care i was able to find the OEC handbook online as well as the ski patrollers manual. Both these sources are very reliable and contain a great amount of fact to help me improve my argument that OEC technicians are just as vital as doctors in the life saving process.
